RSV: Respiratory virus that families should be aware of

Daytime met with Dr. Ittay Moreno, a hospitalist with Texas Tech Physicians El Paso, as he explained to us what RSV is and why families should be on the lookout for it this season.

“RSV is most famously known for causing bronchiolitis.” Moreno went on to explain that this is a respiratory virus that commonly affects children under two years of age.

“We are in the midst of bronchiolitis season, which starts in November and runs all the way through March.”

The symptoms of this virus include fever, runny-nose, congestion and difficulty breathing. Bronchiolitis can be treated at home, however, cases can get severe enough to warrant a trip to the ER. Parents are urged to seek medical attention if they notice their children have symptoms of bronchiolitis and have difficulty breathing.

“The most important tip is to just be vigilant and recognize when your child needs medical care.” Dr. Moreno explained.
