May 4th is known as Star Wars Day by fans all over the world. The Star Wars franchise started in 1977, and many attribute the phrase "May the 4th Be With You" to May 4, 1979, when Margaret Thatcher was elected as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the Conservative party put an ad in the London Evening News that read "May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie, Congratulations."

As most fans know, the fourth day in May became Star Wars Day because of the turn of phrase, "May the force be with you," used by Jedi masters in the movies.

The first organized Star Wars Day came decades later, in 2011 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The event featured a costume contest, trivia, parodies and tribute films. Since then, Star Wars Day has been celebrated all over the world, and beyond: in 2015, astronauts at the International Space Station (ISS) watched the original Star Wars film.
