Tackling Gym Intimidation in 2020

Getting fit can be daunting for people who are not athletic and never step foot into a gym. Our El Paso correspondent, Amy Licerio, says she has always struggled with using gym equipment when it comes to working out. In January 2019, Licerio decided she would work with fitness trainer Rene Analla to get over her fear of intimidating gym equipment and culture. Licerio made a commitment to working out early mornings at least three days a week and built stamina while learning how to safely use gym equipment with the help of Analla. Licerio lost 40 pounds and continues to work out with Analla. She’s sharing three tips for anyone who wants to make going to the gym a part of their lifestyle:

1.Look for a trainer you get a good vibe from and who shares your health journey goals.

2.Decide how many days you will go to the gym and stick to it. This means showing up to the gym on Saturday because you have put off one day.

3.Once you get a trainer, pay attention to your form and how a movement feels when it's done correctly. You want to be able to work out when your trainer is not available.

Fitness trainer Analla also has some tips for newbies starting out without trainers:

1.Get into the gym now for cardio. The elliptical and treadmill are the best machines to get you moving right away.

2.While you are working out, keep an eye out for trainers in the gym. If you see someone you may like to train with, introduce yourself and ask if they offer an assessment session (this should be free).

3.Using the gym equipment like cable and free weights may be tempting but don't injure yourself. The best thing you can do is use your own body weight when you begin working out.

4.When you start using machines, use the ones that lock you up such as a shoulder press and seated squat machine. Also, take the time to read the instructions for every machine.

Best of luck to all the gym newbies. Be sure to make small goals to achieve as the year progresses.
