Healthy Smiles Start Early: How San Antonio Supports Children’s Oral Health

National Children’s Dental Health Month is underway, and it’s the perfect time to focus on programs that support kids’ overall wellbeing. Corderro checked in with the City of San Antonio Metro Health District to learn more about the importance of children’s oral health, and what families can do to keep young smiles healthy.

He spoke with Dr. Rebecca Davenport and Meredith Howe, who emphasized that healthy habits begin much earlier than most people realize. Even before a child’s first tooth appears, gently cleaning the mouth with a soft cloth helps set a standard for good oral hygiene.

Metro Health also highlighted their Miles of Smiles Initiative, a mobile dental program that brings preventative care directly to kids. The mobile clinics provide cleanings, exams, and other essential services—removing barriers so that children can access quality dentalcare where they learn and play.

For uninsured or underinsured families, the Title V Program offers another path to support. Working in partnership with the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry, the program connects children with specialists who provide screenings and determine eligibility for low or no cost care. The goal is simple: make sure every child in San Antonio has the opportunity to maintain strong, healthy teeth.

These programs are empowering families to build lifelong dental habits, and helping ensure every child gets the care they need for a bright, confident smile.
