There is an entire month dedicated to our nation’s love of peanut butter. Celebrity historian Raffi Andonian was here to break down all the nutty history behind it.
Peanuts go back thousands of years, with early versions being used in stews and soups. Today, the U.S. exports over a billion pounds of peanuts annually. But it wasn’t until George Washington Carver came along that peanuts truly found their place in American culture. He discovered over 100 uses for them, ranging from food products to even shaving with peanut butter.
The rise of machines and agricultural technology made it easier to harvest peanuts and produce peanut butter on a large scale. Originally marketed as a premium health food, peanut butter gained popularity as a protein-rich option that didn’t rely on animal products.
From ancient fields to modern lunchboxes, peanut butter has come a long way, and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
Texas is in the top five peanut producing states.
