Holiday co-parenting tips for a peaceful season

Co-parenting can be a challenge, especially during the holidays. Today, we’re tackling some of the most common dilemmas that can either keep the season peaceful or unintentionally stir things up. Family law attorney and podcast host Hannah Hembree Bell joined us with real scenarios she sees every year and tips for handling them.

The first holiday season after a divorce or separation can be especially tough, but these strategies can help:

Asking kids where they want to be on Christmas morning: It may seem thoughtful, but it puts too much pressure on children and feels like asking “who do you love more.” Avoid this to prevent conflict.

Sending extra holiday treats or gifts to the other parent’s home: If you have a healthy co-parenting relationship, this can be a kind gesture and a peace offering.

Asking kids to keep holiday plans secret: Never do this, it undermines trust and makes kids feel caught in the middle. Encourage openness instead.

Splitting the cost of one big present together: This can work if both parents agree, but be mindful that disagreements can arise.

The most important takeaway? Keep kids out of adult drama so they can enjoy a peaceful, happy holiday season.
