Shoppers Beware: Return fees on the rise


SAN ANTONIO- If you are returning items this holiday, you may want to keep in mind that some stores are now charging "return fees."

Returning Christmas gifts can be a delicate situation, but it's also quite common. In fact, studies show that nearly half of all customers return at least one gift after the holidays. There are a number of reasons why someone might need to return a gift, such as if it's the wrong size, color, or style, or if the recipient already has it. Whatever the reason, it's important to be aware of the store's return policy before you head back to the store.

81% of the major retailers like H&M, J.Crew, and Macy's have started charging a small fee for each return they receive.

This is an attempt by retailers to stop the growing number of returns throughout the retail industry.

The National Retail Federation reported that 17% of merchandise was returned in 2022, totaling in $816 billion. This was a nine percent increase from 2019.

Even online stores like Amazon are beginning to charge for returned items. If you are returning an amazon package to a UPS store when an Amazon affiliated store is closer, you will be charged $1 to your account.

Each store's return policies and fees are different, with some charging up to $10.

Most stores have a grace period for returns after Christmas, but it's usually not as long as their regular return window. For example, a store might have a 30-day return policy for most items, but only a 14-day return policy for Christmas gifts. It's also important to note that some stores may charge a restocking fee for returned items, especially if the item is opened or used.

If you're not sure of the store's return policy, you can usually find it on their website or by calling customer service. You can also ask the gift giver for a copy of the receipt, which will usually have the return policy printed on it.

Once you know the return policy, you can gather your items and head to the store. If you have the receipt, the process will be much easier. But even if you don't have the receipt, most stores will still work with you. They may be able to look up the purchase using the gift giver's credit card information or the item's barcode.

When you're returning the item, be polite and explain to the salesperson why you're returning it. They will usually be happy to help you find a replacement item or issue a refund.

Here are a few tips for returning Christmas gifts:

  • Keep the original packaging and receipt, if possible.
  • Return the item as soon as possible. Most stores have a time limit for returns.
  • Be polite and explain to the salesperson why you're returning the item.
  • If you're not sure of the store's return policy, call customer service or check their website.
