PHOTOS: The tranquil Japanese garden bridging cultures and cities is San Antonio's hidden gem

SAN ANTONIO - Nestled within the heart of San Antonio is a hidden gem that bridges cultures and exemplifies the enduring bond between sister cities.

In 1989, the city of Kumamoto, San Antonio's beloved sister city, extended a gift —the Kumamoto En, a serene and relaxing Japanese Garden.

The word "En" translates to "garden" in Japanese, encapsulating the spirit of this enchanting area.

Crafted by landscape artists and master craftsmen from Japan, the Kumamoto En is a testament to the artistry that defines Japanese gardens worldwide.

At its core, this 85' x 85' masterpiece is a harmonious blend of nature, tradition, and diplomacy.

Modeled after a garden at EmperorKiyoshi Yasui's summer residence, Kumamoto En includes a tranquil pond, symbolizing the vast Pacific Ocean that gracefully separates the realms of East and West.

From unique water features to timeless granite lanterns and the timeless allure of bamboo fences, Kumamoto En is a masterpiece in miniature.

Kumamoto En serves as a living testament to the enduring friendship between San Antonio and Kumamoto.

In exchange for this haven, San Antonio gifted Kumamoto a piece of Texan history—a log cabin from the Hill Country town of Fredericksburg.

Discover Kumamoto En—a tranquil haven where diplomacy meets nature, and the essence of two sister cities is eternally preserved in rustic elegance.
