Thunderbirds in San Antonio for Great Texas Airshow this weekend

SAN ANTONIO - The pride in the sky for the United States Air Force is coming to San Antonio.

The Thunderbirds, aflying aerobatic team, which travel the world over performing precision aerial maneuvers and demonstrating the capabilities of Air Force high performance aircraft, will perform at the Great Texas Airshow on Apr. 23-24 at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

The aerial event will also feature the F-35 Lightning II Demonstration Team, the Wings of Blue Air Force Parachute Team, and many more in celebrating the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force.

“After a challenging season and last year’s airshow cancellation, we are all looking forward to celebrating the heritage, precision, and professionalism of our Air Force and providing the San Antonio community an opportunity to interact with the teammates and mission partners who are responsible for making JBSA the DOD’s premier joint base,” said Brig. Gen. Caroline Miller, the 502nd Air Base Wing and JBSA commander.

The Thunderbirds, which were formed in 1953, run through a mix of formation flying and solo routines. The four-aircraft diamond formation demonstrates the training and precision of Air Force pilots, while the solo aircraft highlight the maximum capabilities of the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

The pilots perform approximately 30 maneuvers in a demonstration.

The event is free and open to the public.
