Healing Hearts 2020

The Healing Hearts event looks a little different this year with everything going virtual and no gala to accompany the telethon. The telethon has raised $800 thousand dollars to date, and ThriveWell hopes to raise more this year than ever.

History of Healing Hearts Gala

While working as the main anchor at KABB FOX 29 News and juggling family life Karen Martinez was diagnosed with stage 3-breast cancer. Throughout this her vision was to establish the Healing Hearts Gala benefiting the ThriveWell Cancer Foundation – a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

While undergoing chemotherapy and multiple surgeries, Karen managed to raise more than $130,000, which went to help cancer patients with financial support for medical expenses, transportation to treatment, doctor’s appointments and more.

Karen Martinez’s Legacy

Sadly, Karen is no longer with us (having passed away in 2013), but her spirit lives on through her incredible legacy. As a respected TV reporter, wife, mother and friend she continues to inspire us all.

Where Does the Money Go?

100% of the donations from the Healing Hearts Gala go to the Karen Martinez Patient Assistance Fund at ThriveWell Cancer Foundation that provides assistance to those who are battling cancer in South Texas. This can be in the form of co-payments, transportation, or even gas to get to and from appointments.

The Future

Karen’s vision for the Gala is still very much alive and continues to help other cancer patients through the money raised.
