Event History

Every year, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) has hosted Light the Way on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, kicking off the holiday season in San Antonio for over 30 years. This year we continue our tradition while also maintaining social distancing by introducing a new format – a drive-thru celebration.

In previous years, the event featured live entertainment from UIW and UIW Brainpower Connection (Incarnate Word High School and St. Anthony Catholic High School) students. Guests could grab a bite to eat in the Food Truck Yard, enjoy activities for all ages in the Kids’ Corner, and shop from local vendors in Shoppers’ Lane. Guests could also take selfies with Santa and enjoy free cookies and cocoa. Additionally, UIW students, alumni, and their families could enjoy special events inside the Student Engagement Center during Light the Way. Months leading up to Light the Way, UIW students could help by volunteering to replace broken or faded Christmas lights, participate in the Display Board Contest, and help on the day of the Light the Way.

This year, we keep that spirit alive while we introduce new features designed to delight and bring our community together. Light the Way truly is UIW’s gift to the San Antonio community and celebrates history rooted in tradition. We hope that you will enjoy this celebration this year and join us for many years to come!
